My instructions to my daughters at my funeral are to ask anyone present to raise their hand if they have not received a handwritten note from me at some point in my life, so that my daughters can remedy that and send one. I like to think those notes are a better reflection than anything I do for a paycheck. I have not thought of myself as a writer or artist, but I have used scraps and maps and tape and twine to write those notes. Maybe the secret to throwing off the hegemony is to color in those spaces they don't control.
